While I’m obviously thankful for Harry Potter for many reasons, the book that I’m most thankful for is Holes by Louis Sachar. I remember watching the movie on Disney Channel and although, I liked it, I was a little confused. At around 10, I hadn’t had a smooth transition into chapter books without pictures, but one day I noticed the book sitting on the bookshelf in my 5th grade classroom. I borrowed the book and began reading. I can’t really explain what happened, but I consider that to be when I fell in love with reading. It answered all the loose ends in the movie and it took my imagination on this unforgettable ride. Reading became this introvert’s escape from the world. I can’t begin to explain the slight emptiness I felt when I finished, but a few weeks later, My mom bought me Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. 12 years later, I’m still an avid reader and a better person because of it.
