Ken T. 10 months agoAs a person who does not regularly watch or participate in football matches at any level I can’t comment on whether the ref made the correct call or not. It is unfortunate for the Canadian team that the call concluded the way it did, but probably still the right call. After the game Sinclair made a comment about it and mentioned that refs usually give a warning to goalkeepers about the time they have before making a delay of game call. I heard that the official FIFA rule say the ref is not required to give a warning. This is upsetting because it means the refs have a direct influence over the game. They can chose to give a warning or not which can support a team by giving them a very good opportunity to score a goal. I think the refs should either be required to give a warning in all timed situations (goalkeeper possession, throw ins, corner kicks, etc) or not be allowed to give warnings at all. Ideally, there should be an automated countdown system for situations where time is an issue, similar to a shot clock in basketball. It’s just such a shame that refs decision helped to decide the outcome of the game in a sport that should only be decided by the players skill.
