This Week’s Signature Songs, State By State

Here are the songs that defined America from Dec. 9 to Dec. 15, presented by BuzzFeed and Spotify. A state’s “signature song” is not its most popular, but its most distinctive — that is to say, the one that residents of that state streamed proportionally the most as compared with the U.S. as a whole.

For the week ending Dec. 15, California fell for Selena Gomez's Justin Bieber break-up ballad "The Heart Wants What It Wants," country superstar Lee Brice held a "Drinking Class" in South Dakota, D.C. celebrated the season with Sam Smith's "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas," and tracks from J. Cole's new album 2014 Forest Hills Drive ruled in an impressive five states: Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina and Washington. Next Thursday, more Signature Songs from BuzzFeed and Spotify.
