Things every guy should have in his closet: 1. A good casual blazer in a dark color. This can be worn with almost anything. Don’t button it. Avoid brass buttons, especially if it’s not navy blue. 2. A good t-shirt in white or black. This should be form-fitting and soft or just a bit baggy and soft. If the former, wear it tucked in. If the latter, wear it untucked. 3. Two good pairs of jeans. One jet black and snug (not skinny), the other faded blue, slightly loose and distressed. 4. A casual button-down shirt. Try a subtle pattern or pin-stripe. Dark or light. Wear it un-tucked, buttoned to the top or three buttons down over a t-shirt. It’s not a jacket, don’t wear it like one (un-buttoned all the way). 5. A good, casual pair of leather lace-ups. Not too shiny, these are not office shoes. Sneakers are for sports and day-time casual. Never wear them at night. 6. Subtle accessories. Your gigantic paper weight of a watch is to impress business colleagues. At night, wear something sleek and subtle. If you wear your collar loose, try a simple, loose choker (never wear multiple gold chains). Try a small ring or two, but not the brass knuckles effect of rings on every finger. Keep it light, limited and casual. Glasses can be hot. If you need them, don’t pretend you don’t (nothing says loser like squinting at the menu). Get a cool pair, wear them with confidence. 7. Consider a bag. If you do, make it mean something. Carry useful stuff. It can impress if you have just the right thing at the right moment. Don’t over stuff it. If it’s clear your bag is just for show, it’s dumb. Clean it out regularly, it’s not the junk drawer. “A man should look as if he had bought his clothes with intelligence, put them on with care, and then forgotten all about them.” - Hardy Amies, Saville Row tailor and dressmaker to Queen Elizabeth II
