The 18 Worst Things For Left-Handed People
I can no longer be silent on the daily oppression of the left-handed community! Hear our pain, world!
1. Spiral Notebooks
Hurts the side of your hand. The worst are the 5-subject with the extra big rings.
2. Writing in a 3-ring binder
You have to do that thing where you fit your hand between the top two, then eventually have to pick it up and fit it in between the bottom two.
3. Only 1 gross lefty glove in gym class
The handsweat of a thousand lefties before you.
4. Only 2 pairs of the green lefty scissors in class, 3 lefty kids.
Scrambling through the scissors to find the ones with the green rubber handles, only to see they’re already all gone.
5. Ballpoint pens don’t work as well because you’re pushing, not pulling the ball
The ink will never flow as well for lefties, so our pens stop up more.
8. iPad Kindle app - left side is back page
This is really annoying - if you prefer to hold it in your left hand, you have to move your hand all the way to the other side to tap. On a real Kindle, page forward is on both sides, thankfully.
9. Driver’s cup holder is for the right hand
So you have to hold your cup with your right hand.
11. Dying sooner, so becoming a zombie sooner
Studies have shown lefties die up to 9 years sooner than righties. At least we’ll get to eat their brains.
12. These desks
College lecture hall desks with postage-stamp sizes desks. You have to twist your back and hold up your arm to use.
13. Measuring cups show you the stupid metric side
The cups/ounces side is for the righties. You have to do that thing where you twist your hole arm around to be able to read ounces.
15. Made for righties
Apparently you can get modified lefty controllers, but maybe you should just go outside.
16. Cord on the credit card machine pen never long enough
Annoying. Annoying. I’m annoyed.
18. For which someone invented THESE
The saddest thing is that all the lefties in the BuzzFeed office now want these. The indignity.

jessh6 2 months agoSome of these things I agree with. Others not. I live in a country where we drive on the left side of the road… the cup holder thing isn’t an issue. I use the metric system for measuring things… an advantage if printed on the left side, but not really something I’ve taken notice of. The number pad on a keyboard isn’t an issue either, you adapt… and if you’re touch typing your left hand has control of more letters. I just thank jeebus I never had to deal with those desks, because that would’ve driven me nuts! Have a go at writing with your page on an extreme angle, you’ll get less smudgy smudgy up the side of your hand. But ultimately, while many of these things are annoying, left-handed people are incredibly adaptable and can make themselves both-handed and/or ambidextrous at many tasks… a very distinct advantage to right-handed people that have never had to!

A.Leigh 2 months agoYes, well, when your recipe calls for 1/3 cup of one ingredient, 1 1/2 cups of another, and 1/4 cup of another, are you going to take the time to convert all of those to metric (which often means using a slightly different amount), or just measure them as is? I agree that the metric system makes more sense, but a measuring cup is not a valid starter for that conversation. Non-metric recipe = non-metric measurements, period.

My car must be made for lefties. I drive a Toyota Yaris and the drivers cup holder is actually on the left side (to the left of the steering wheel) there are no cup holders in the center. At my college in many of the older lecture halls the seat on the end of the row on the left side was a lefty desk. Yeah I know kind of limited were a lefty could comfortably sit and take notes. The newer lecture halls had the newer style chair/desk with a bigger pull up desk so it could be used easier by all (because lets face it some of those little tiny tablet desks were hardly big enough to fit a piece of paper). To those who said that the glove in the photo is actually a righty glove you are not correct. That glove would fit on a right hand. Lefties wear gloves on their right hand and righties wear them on their left hand.

kristalm 3 months agoThe ink and graphite on the side of the hand is not just a lefty problem. It is an occupational hazard for any artist; if you let your hand touch the paper while you’re drawing on it, you just get used to the side of your hand getting covered in graphite, ink, marker, etc. As for the cup holders in the car, for now my daughter (who is a lefty) and I are just fine with it because she gets the passenger side, which puts the cup holder on the left. However, there are certainly times when I would prefer the cup holder being on the left, especially when my cup or bottle is quite tall - makes it difficult to switch gears around my drink.

No… you missed one, the number one one! I am neurologically left handed and got “switched” sometime in early grade school. My handwriting is atrocious. I also thought I was dyslexic because I have problems responding to left and right, plus a number of other spatial issues!!! So, getting forced to be right handed is definitely #1.

susankirklande 4 months agoWow-funny! We raised 6 kids-three righty-three lefty,I kid you not. We tried to help them to exult in their coolness(‘Paul McCartney is a lefty!’) but my husband did have a tough time teaching them to tie their shoes. They say that to this day,they tie them backwards!

patricks31 5 months agoI’m a lefty, we adapt to the environment we live in, so if it doesn’t work, then we find ways to make it work. The spiral and 3-ring binders was never a problem, i have the paper at a 90 degree angle when i write….yeah i know weird. lol

Not left-handed (every male in my family is, but none of the women *shrug*), but I know when we did penmanship classes in elementary school, the books said to have the paper at an angle (45 degrees, maybe?) if you were left-handed. I remember trying it out, out of curiosity (and because I tried pretty hard to be ambidextrous, but the left-handed writing thing never quite worked out for me), and it seemed a lot easier. With a 90 degree angle, wouldn’t you have to basically write sideways? I’m sure it wouldn’t take long to get used to, but that sounds like a pain.
