Beginning last Tuesday, residents in Portsmouth (nicknamed Pompey), England reported seeing a strange, saucer-shaped object flying through the sky.
Word spread, using the designated hashtag #pompeyufo.
The reports continued on Wednesday, and Lewis Rogers (26), of The Seagulls, Lee-on-the-Solent, took this photograph while visiting a friend from the area:
That same afternoon, Twitter user Ladyloki tweeted a different picture of the same object:
Portsmouth's local paper Portsmouth News reported on the sightings on Friday, September 19th. (Online text available here.)
The paper quotes Johnny Blackwell, 23, who says, "I don't believe in UFOs, but when I saw this I didn't know what it was. It didn't look like a cloud, and it was moving very fast."
Laura Young, a spokesperson for The Met Office (The U.K.'s national weather service), told the News: "After looking at the images, I can say the object is nothing to do with the weather. It is not meteorological and is not a cloud."
