Do We All Unknowingly Have A Gender Bias?

Don't judge a book by its cover.

Whether or not you're aware of it, you might unknowingly match certain genders with certain professions. So we went out on the street to see what people assumed others did for a living, solely based on their appearance.

Ben is a nurse, though you might not guess it by just looking at him.

    Kim is an aerospace engineer.

    Hugo is a dental assistant.

And Jen is a technical project manager.

We printed out pictures of our participants, as well as a list of occupations (including their own), to see if people could match the correct profession with the person.

Barely anyone on the street could guess the correct occupation. A large portion guessed Jen was a nurse and Hugo was a firefighter.

Which isn't really their fault — considering these professions are, respectively, primarily female- and male-dominated.

Although we have some way to go, it's people like Ben who are crucial in breaking through gender norms.

Moral of the story: Pursue what you love, regardless of your gender.
