Kids grow up dreaming about being the best in all kinds of sports. However, there's something different between being an NHL champion and being a World Series champion, being a Super Bowl champion, or being an NBA champion. The Cup. Every spring sportscasters are ready to remind us daily that it's the oldest current championship trophy of the four major sports, but that's not the most significant thing about the Stanley Cup. The way I see it, I'm fairly certain kids don't fantasize specifically about the trophies of other sports the way hockey players do about the cup. There's winning a championship vs. lifting Lord Stanley's Cup. From the moment they decide to play hockey, the goal is not to win a championship. The goal is specifically to earn the opportunity to lift the Stanley Cup and have your name engraved on it, along with all of the other winners of hockey's highest honor (basically to be immortal forever).

Overtime goals, historic rivalries, bench clearing brawls, and eventually some hardware. The Stanley Cup Playoffs start tonight (see, no one even calls them the "NHL" Playoffs).
