7 Things You Need To Know About Modeling

For industry outsiders, a lot of myths and rumors are purported as facts. The general public regularly views the modeling profession as one filled with glamor, glitz, fame and lots of money

"Modeling, for me, isn't about being beautiful but creating something interesting for people to look at and think about," said Kylie Bax, a New Zealand-born model turned actress, turned mom.

For industry outsiders, a lot of myths and rumors are purported as facts. The general public regularly views the modeling profession as one filled with glamour, glitz, fame and lots of money. However, the facts generally contradict the conjecture that is presented to others.

Whether it's models usually not eating (and if they do it's just a salad), models working for a few hours for lucrative paychecks or models getting to travel to Milan, Paris or Tokyo for photoshoots and fashion shows, the misinformation spreads like wildfire, which then incites a false depiction of the business.

Just like any other line of work, there are many positives and there are many negatives in the modeling industry. Although the facts vary based on who you speak with these things you need to know are objective and true and puts modeling into perspective.

Here are seven things you need to know about modeling:

    1. Unemployment

Unless you're a model like Gisele Bundchen, Heidi Klum or Naomi Campbell, you'll probably experience bouts of joblessness. Both novice and seasoned models are victims of this fact because there are so many models competing for every single gig available out there. Of course, a lack of modeling jobs also leads to a paucity of money to pay rent, bills and food.

    2. Food

This has been a ubiquitous rumor since modeling was invented. Indeed, fashion models must maintain a fine physique but this can be accomplished without starving one's self or metastasizing into a person with bulimia or anorexia. Models are just like any other person out there who wishes to binge on pizza, burgers and hot dogs – they normally exercise frequently.

    3. Travels

After watching fashion shows on television or reading about them in publications, it's likely that the viewer will surmise that every single model gets to take an adventure to Venice, Sydney or New York City. However, for most models, it's unlikely that they'll ever step foot outside of the country or even their city and thus never see the beautiful scenery of Berlin, Vienna or Prague.

    4. Pay

It's true that a professional successful model will earn around six figures for a photoshoot – possibly more – but for someone just starting out, a few things may happen: they might not get remuneration for their work, they might get paid with clothes or food or they'll be promised money but not get paid at all. Akin to any other industry, there are quacksalvers even in the modeling business.

    5. Idling

Various media outlets have depicted fashion and modeling to be on-the-go industries that are busy, busy, busy and do not come with any downtime. However, there is a lot of idling time for models who have to wait around. The reason for this is because photographers have to set up, fashion designers have to get the perfect outfit and there are likely to be unexpected setbacks.

    6. Dreadful settings

The photos look beautiful and the models are smiling appearing to have a great time. If you think that's reality then here is the bad news: some of the settings are just dreadful. For instance, a model might be showcasing winter outfits, but these are prepared in the summertime for the catalogues released in autumn and winter.

    7. First dibs on new clothes

Sure, models don't get to actually keep the clothes, but they do get to be one of the first people to get the latest buzz of the latest fashion release by some of the biggest names the industry has to offer. They also get to be the first to wear it, which is the average woman's desire.
