A powerful 10-meter-high tsunami hits Japan after 8.8-magnitude earthquake at 2:46 pm local time. Tsunami alerts have been extended to the following countries among others: Russia, Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific coast of South America but does not include North America.
