This Is How Amazingly Realistic Games Will Look Next Year

The picture-perfect skin is cool, but it’s the water that got me. It’s ABOUT TIME for some accurate sea foam rendering in games, you know?

I know, right? Now tell your friends!
This Is How Amazingly Realistic Games Will...

Here we’ve got ourselves a preview of the latest version of CryEngine 3, a near ancestor of which was used to build the spectacular Crysis 2. Pretty incredible stuff, and you can experiment with the development tools today, assuming you’ve got a fairly high-end gaming machine.

While Crytek’s engines tend to lead when it comes to super-high-end graphics, they don’t have very many licensees. The Unreal engine, on the other hand, powers some of the most popular games in the world, all the way down to iOS titles. Here’s what the Unreal folks are forecasting for the next version of their game engine:

Next year’s games are looking pretty. Between photorealistic texturing like this and the facial motion capture used in last year’s LA Noire, I think we might finally be starting to claw our way out of the Uncanny Valley. Or else we’re about to tumble into a much deeper crevasse that we just didn’t see before. I’m playing either way.

Allow me to peel back the enthusiasm. This is how realistic video game graphics might look next year provided you have: 1) An incredibly powerful PC
      2) A top of the line graphics card
      3) Plenty of hard drive
      4) A decent monitor If you play on a console you’re shit out of luck until you get the next generation (XBox 720 or whatever, PS4, not the new thing Nintendos coming out with because if there’s anything we’ve learned over the years it’s that they fucking need good graphics) and the latest bullshit TV trend they charge you $1,000+ for you. Either way you ain’t seeing these graphics for your games in your homes without dropping around $2,500.

We are not seeing all of these new effects until 2-3 years time.. Both of those videos are taking the full oomph of the presentation computer (and not rendered in real time, i suspect), majority of systems can’t use them yet… But it’s great to see what DX11 has to offer.

    • Personally, I think Cryengine 3 looks better, but knowing the games industry, and with personal experience, Unreal is a lot more accessible.

Here’s the thing… If I want to watch a pretty scene, I’ll watch a movie. I appreciate the effort people go through with these games, but at the end of the day the MAJORITY of “pretty games” coming out have neglected gameplay. I want to play GOOD GAMES… I don’t want to watch pretty games.  I’m looking at you Final Fantasy 13. >_>

Man. I can’t wait to have the cut scenes look even better while the game continues to look like average shit. The day the actual game play looks like the cut scenes is the day we will have made a major achievement in gaming.

That’s nice, but I can still write my name in Mario jumps. Always could. Can I get a FPS engine without the floaty-tanky-feel thing? Biggest selling console was a damn Gameboy, with wii close behind. Graphics are nice, but they don’t sell consoles. Games either when you get right down to it.
