The chances of having to fight off zombies OR people are slimmer than say, CALIFORNIA simply because there are less of them. 40 people/mi in ME as opposed to 238 people/mi in CA. Also, while more rural states have yes, less WALMARTS, more people homestead, farm, and are generally more self sufficient, which means they don’t need a walmart run during the zombie apocalypse.
