Forty-three-year-old Texas native Dawn Keim received her cochlear implant surgery courtesy of The Doctors. The procedure restored her hearing after 15 years of deafness, and the show captured the moment she finally heard her 8-year-old talk.

Sarah Elizabeth 3 months agoInteresting how after severe hearing loss for 15 years neither she nor her family members/friends ever learned sign language or participated in the larger Deaf community and she preferred to read lips - which is extremely difficult.

emilyisanelf 4 months agotranscript for the full segment: doctor: imagine this scenario you’re 30 years old and you lose your sense of hearing but then doctors tell you that you may have the chance to get it back. sounds like a good thing right? well for dawn, making the decision was a bit more complicated. dawn: I lost my hearing about 15 years ago. sister: we knew that her hearing loss was as bad as it was when we would be talking to her and she would turn and walk away.
that’s when we really noticed that there was a serious problem. dawn: when i was 30 i made my first appointment and had my hearing checked. i realized that i had profound hearing loss. i lost speech recognition, so hearing aids have never been an option for me. communicating for me is extremely exhausting. i communicate with people by reading lips. it’s almost impossible for me to follow any conversation. in a group, i’m lost very fast. [from video]
i have no idea what anybody is saying
i’m really unable to focus and hear right now it’s very difficult for me to be in large groups so i tend to stay with a small group of people that i’m comfortable with. the first time i met with dr. slattery was 2 years ago and he told me i was a candidate for the cochlear implant. it was very hard to make the decision to have the surgery. it took a lot of influence from my family. i’m not afraid of the surgery. i’m more afraid of hearing. i’ve never heard my 8-year-old son’s voice. in my mind i can hear my son’s voice, but i know that i don’t hear it. so maybe i’m afraid of what i will hear compared to what my brain tells me that i hear. doctor: just yesterday she was able to hear her 8-year-old son for the very first time, and we were there to capture it. [video]
dr. slattery: dawn’s activation was fantastic. she’s gonna leave here soon to go meet her son and hear his voice for the first time. Dawn:
I still haven’t spoken to my son, and so I’m looking forward to hearing him.
Son:
She never heard my voice. I’m just really excited that she can finally hear.
D:
I’m nervous and hopeful, but I’m also afraid. I think I still have that fear of ‘I’m not gonna hear him.’
S: Hey Mom, could you hear me?
D: Yes! [laughs]
D: Now you can talk and I can hear you.
S: I love you.
D: I love you too.
Are you happy that I can hear you?
S: Yes.
Now she can finally hear me, and I’m not silent anymore. -

Caro11 4 months agoI’m deaf. First thing- why wasn’t the video captioned? It’s inaccesible to the deaf people. -_- way to go, guys. Second thing, what I can glean from the video is that there’s a misconception that cochlear implant can make deaf people hear again. It worked for her because she used to be able to hear. I want to emphasize that cochlear implant wasn’t always successful or a perfect match for deaf people, especially those who are profoundly deaf or/and deaf from birth. People- if you do have a deaf child, please please wait until the child is old enough to make a decision whether to get a cochlear implant or not. Cochlear implant is a huge decision, expensive, and has risks, cause injuries from the surgery, and generally have an about 60% success rate- not a great rate. Please please teach your deaf child sign language first so s/he can have an access to language ASAP. Can always learn how to speak later. I am very thankful that my parents did that for me.

Jennifer Park 4 months agoThe boy saying “I love you” is what really got me crying. Hearing your child say that is the sweetest sound right up there with hearing them laugh. I’m so happy she can experience that. It is what I live for.
