‘…but his mother said he told her, “‘Mama, I told people I was HIV [positive] … and they wanted me anyway, because of who I am.’ So in a way he feels kind of used.”’ That kind of says it all, doesn’t it? This guy is a narcissist, who is dyslexic, not, as the article seems to imply, developmentally disabled to the degree that he bears no responsibility for his actions. If the press coverage seemed to have a “racist” tint, then this article easily continues that trend by being highly condescending and patronizing toward African Americans. As one of the other commenters pointed out, he was counseled on what an HIV positive diagnosis meant, even if he couldn’t read the form he signed. He knew what his status was when he continued having unprotected sex and FILMING it. For him to say to his mother that his partners wanted to have unprotected sex with him, knowing what that meant, because he was a famous college wrestler is sickening, and shows a degree of rationalization that the author of this article doesn’t believe Johnson is mentally capable of. There is scapegoating going on here, for sure.
