not saying i know anything about this incident/case, but i really dont see how a ‘civilized’ first-world government can actually sanction the death of an individual. regardless of what someone did, governing life and death is not part of the government’s jurisdiction. life imprisonment seems like much more of a punishment anyhow.

I think the death penalty should be abolished, but this story and the headline is so misleading it almost makes me sick.  First of all, the Supreme Court doesn’t have the authority to just re-decide the case. This is a request for stay of execution. There has to be some error in law or procedure below for the order to be granted. If the case below was properly handled and there are absolutely no open questions of law or mistakes in procedure, the Court can’t just say “Meh, we don’t like it, reverse.”  The fact of the matter is, Troy Davis’ case already came before the Supreme Court, and he already lost.  And as for the criticism regarding Justice Thomas, clearly you don’t understand how this works. At least five of the nine Justices have to agree to stay the execution. Here, not a single one supported staying the execution. The fact that Justice Thomas is the one who received and handled the request is irrelevant. He only received the order because he is the circuit justice for the 11th Circuit and is the Justice who receives such requests on behalf of the Court arising out of that circuit. If this case arose in the 6th Circuit, it’d be Justice Kagan’s name on the order.  They didn’t kill him. There was nothing they could do.

And he killed that cop with only 2 bullets. Beat that homeless man with only 2 fists. Numbers are fun.

why does it not surprise me that it was thomas. one of the worst to sit on the court.

The supreme court didn’t kill him. Stop it with the sensationalist bullshit. I’m not happy about it either, but not every politician who ever heard of the case but didn’t stop it is a traitor to mankind or a murderer.

This needs to stop.
