I posted this in response directly to monkthe monkey's comment below, but I wanted to post this here too- Yes, there are parallels [to the 2008 Democrat primary], so I don't think Democrats should be so happy about this drawn-out process. That said, neither Mitt Romney or Rick Santorum have the following that Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton had. Part of the reason that primary was so drawn out was because you had two candidates with very passionate bases. I don't see that passion with Romney and Santorum; what it seems to be more of is “Well, none of these guys excite me, so I guess I'll go with whoever I think can win.” In that case, this primary also mirrors the 2004 [Democrat] primary, where nobody was really all that passionate about John Kerry, but for some reason everyone thought he had the best chance of beating George Bush.
