Dollhauser and Rogers (the American volleyball duo) skipped the opening ceremonies this Olympics due to the fact that it did effect their play when they attended in Beijing. And those guys still took gold in 2008. Just saying - yes, it’s an excuse, but there may be a bit of validity to the claim.
The odd thing about absolute top athletes is that they tend to suffer from injury quite easily (a lot of wear and tear) and every minute detail of their preparation affects their performance greatly. Unless you’re Usain Bolt, then you eat McNuggets before breaking a world record; then again, he’s probably a cheetah in a bodysuit.
That doesn’t sound that weird to me. Standing for a long time can totally mess with your back, hips and hamstrings. Depending on what old injuries you have, it can even lay you up for a few days.
