As I’m sure you know from the mountains of advertising, the piece of crap that is “Star Wars: Episode I” returns to theaters today, 13 years after we all first tried to claw our eyes out while watching it. The only difference is now it’s in 3D. I remember when this movie came out (I was 11) I was all about it (I was 11) because I had grown up on the originals. However, after recently watching this movie because my nephew wanted to (he’s 7 so I’ll give him a break) I realized why this movie sucked…and here is an example. Qui Gon and Obi-wan get into Gungan submarine thing to go through the core with Jar Jar and are soon attacked by a large fish…a larger fish shows up and eats to original fish and the trio escapes. *cheesy scene cut to some other bullshit - probably drama with queen amadala* Return to our trio still underwater, now facing mechanical issues as their submarine thing loses power and are soon attacked by a large fish…a larger fish shows up and eats to original fish and the trio escapes. did that not JUST happen like 2 minutes ago? who wrote this shit!?

The worst part is that it is a bafflingly boring movie where you sit wondering, “What am I watching?!!” until the killer end duel which allows you to think, “Hey, maybe the next one will be better.” The following two movies are better but compared to Phantom Menace, a dental appointment is better.

What sucked about Phantom Menace was you were no longer 7 years old when you first saw it, like you were with the first Star Wars. It was just, at worst, a merely average genre movie that fell flat in a few areas. It could never have lived up to your expectations. Nothing could. That is why you hated it. Get over it.

Phantom is deserving of some criticism. I think most of the criticism comes out of a frustration of wanting to replicate the feeling one had seeing Star Wars for the first time. That is such a high bar to hurdle. Time has only made that bar higher too. I have seen a lot of great movies since but none have come close to blowing my mind like Star Wars did. I don’t ever expect it to be replicated nor do I want one to. Judging another movie to it can’t justly be done. In that vein there are things I like about Phantom and things I don’t. Overall I like it.
