When Fox decided to reboot the X-Men series, recasting all the actors for a story set in the 1960s, the question on every fan's mind — beyond "Will this suck?" — was if and how it would impact the first trilogy of films.

Now we know that it all ties together in a neat time traveling arc.

The first trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past returns old pals Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellan in their Professor X and Magneto roles. They reach out to Wolverine (again played by Hugh Jackman) in the present day, asking him to go into the past to prevent a big ol' war. Wolverine then has to convince past Professor X (James McAvoy) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender) that he's not an insane person, which is tough to do with that hair, if he wants to have any chance of making it work.

As you can see, things get trippy.

X-Men: Days of Future Past hits theaters on May 23, 2014.
