The Most Compelling Love Stories From Comics

What is a good comic book series without a romantic storyline? Every epic hero has a romantic love interest, that special person who is the reason they strive to be the best they can be. Here are some comic book love stories that are just as epic as the battles they inevitably lead to.

  • 1. Superman and Lois Lane

    Superman and Lois Lane

Superman and Lois Lane -- a classic love story with an odd "love triangle." Lois Lane is a hard-hitting journalist who is infatuated with Superman because he is always saving her from danger. Clark Kent (Superman's alter ego) works with Lois and is quite enamored with her. Unfortunately, he cannot tell Lois that he is Superman, so he endures the pain of her loving his "other self."

  • 2. Spiderman and Mary Jane Watson

Peter Parker is a scrawny kid who becomes Spiderman after being bit by a radioactive spider.  He lives next door to his childhood friend, Mary Jane Parker. Peter begins to date Mary Jane, which results in her being captured and put in dangerous situations. Because of her association with Spiderman, they break off their relationship unwillingly. Luckily, love conquers all, and (spoiler alert!) they end up back together and eventually married!

  • 3. John Carter and the Princess of Mars, Dejah Thoris

John Carter and the Princess of Mars, Dejah Thoris

John Carter, a war-weary, former military captain, is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet. During the conflict, Carter finds himself drawn to the beautiful and captivating Princess Dejah Thoris, who valiantly fights to save her people. In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Mars and its people rests in his hands.

  • 4. The Green Lantern and Carol Ferris

The Green Lantern and Carol Ferris

Hal Jordan is a test pilot that possesses the power ring and lantern which turns him into the Green Lantern.  The love story in The Green Lantern is an on-again, off-again battle.  Hal Jordan's girlfriend is Carol Ferris. She is the daughter of an aerospace mogul Carl Ferris (Hal's boss). Things become complicated when Carol takes over her father's company and becomes Hal's immediate boss. Later in the series she becomes possessed by alien force and becomes evil Star Sapphire. The Green Lantern and Star Sapphire continuously battle in the series, but each time Jordan would defeat Carol and revert her to normal.

  • 5. The Love Triangle between Cyclops, Wolverine, and Jean Grey

The Love Triangle between Cyclops, Wolverine, and Jean Grey

The X-Men are a superhero team made up of mutants with unique special powers. Cyclops has the power of shooting lasers from his eyes, Wolverine has super healing powers, and Jean Grey telepathic and telekinetic powers. Before Wolverine became part of the X-Men, Cyclops and Jean Grey had a romantic relationship. As soon as Wolverine shows up, things get rocky. Jean Grey notices Wolverine's feelings towards her. They develop some romantic tension and eventually kiss. Their epic love triangle gets even more complicated when Jean Grey dies and is "reborn" as Phoenix, an evil mutant. Cyclops and Wolverine must work together to defeat the woman that they love.
