This whole thing seems to be given more importance than it actually has. By every comment on the internet, curvier women feel fine about themselves and men put down the lean 'ideals'. Every single person I know acknowledges and rejects the idea of an ideal body, yet there is still such outrage about it.  How about the guys who like skinny women appreciate them, and the fellows who like curvier women appreciate them? If no one is dumb enough to believe that they have to look like celebrities on the covers of fashion magazines, then what's stopping everyone from just living their lives without having to dislike and vitiate body types that differ from their own? If you find that to be necessary for some sense of self-fulfillment, then reconsider your attitude and capability for proper assessment.

  • To be honest, most men aren't aware of how much this effects women or how it shapes their attitudes about their bodies. The input of the images of the “ideal female body” is constant and it affects both men and women (I personally had an ex call me fat when I was a size 2 and every woman I know has had some kind of experience like this, it's not rare by any means). If no one was affected by it we wouldn't be dealing with eating disorders, plastic surgery, the constant influx of diet trends, and a size 10 model wouldn't be considered “plus size”. I've never considered myself to be hyper-sensitive to body images in the media but as I've gotten older I've realized how it effected me in ways I wasn't even aware of.
If you study the psychology behind all of this you'll come to realize how out of control it really is. Media images help shape our understanding of gender roles in our culture, it also effects the way we communicate with each other (ever been in a relationship with someone that acted like they were in a romantic comedy the entire time?).
I've studied both psychology and media and I have to say that once you start getting into these topics you start to become infuriated about how our culture is manipulated. You also start to take note of everything you're visually consuming and how it effects other people. The danger isn't to those that are aware of it and who choose to ignore it, the harm is done to the people that aren't aware of it and choose to buy into it.
