Let’s not forget that Lochte’s race was, in total, 23 seconds faster than Shiwen’s. There’s a little something called energy distribution - she might have swum the last 50m faster, but that’s not the whole thing. Lochte broke a record for being nearly 4 seconds ahead of his competitors at the finish line, so perhaps he didn’t have to drain himself of all energy by the end? Sure, it’s odd, but it’s no reason to automatically, and without evidence, stamp someone as a cheater.

I’d actually be more worried about her as a person: “is she getting enough rest?” / “is she being put under an intolerable amount of strain?” and so on. I love to think of athletes being passionate about their sport (Gemma Spofforth’s post-race interviews this week are a good example) rather than fearful of being shamed by their coach / family / country if they don’t do well.  I’m not saying this with any particular emphasis on a country; I just always worry about the athletes from countries where I get the “you win, or you’re NOTHING” vibe.
