I find it interesting that everyone here has taken such an interest in this situation. But let us get a few things strait about Ratchet and SPC Beberg.
First notice that I refer to her as Specialist, this demotion is a result of her continued negligence to her unit and soldiers and well as her repeated violation of lawful orders.
Second, several people has stated that her friendship and care of this dog did not harm anyone. On more than one occasion Beberg focused her energy more toward the dog than her soldiers, who were also in need. You are a;so not aware that on many occasions then SGT Beberg was ordered to stop using potable water to wash the dog, daily. Ignorace of these orders is not only a hazard to good order and discipline in the army, especially from an NCO, but she was using a scarce resource needed food prep and sanitation to clean this dog. I am a dog lover, and hate a stinky dog as much as the next guy, but I think that this demonstates a serious misalignment of priorities.
Third, in several of the above posted statements people assert that this dog had been vaccinated, it has not.
Finally, I have lived on several patrol bases during my time in Iraq, and have come into contact with several different FOB dogs. In one case in particular, the dogs have legitimately added to the safety and security of the patrol base. I watched these dogs keep local nationals from crowding the gates as well as provide security in other ways. Ratchet did not do this. The unit repeatedly had to repair damages to buildings as well as replaced damaged military equipment destroyed by this dog. In my opinion, and it is just that, this dog has not fulfilled the role of a force protection dog and SPC Beberg did not fullfill the role of a non-commissioned officer. While I personally do not have a problem with force protection dogs being sent home, the unit leadership cannot and should not be faulted for following the set standard and Army regulations.
In closing, for all of you that are so passionate about this dog and an ineffective soldier, if your “outrage” causes the orders of the unit leadership to be contradicted I hope you will proud of your part in undermining good order and discipline, much as SPC Bebergs actions have.
