I remember it clearly, or as clearly as any one of us can remember anything. I was at an outdoor café in Parque Lleras in the upscale neighborhood of Poblado in Medellín, Colombia. This was my first visit to Medellín and I had been there just long enough to realize how ridiculous my irrational fears of being kidnapped or killed in a drug war shootout were.

Lleras was an appropriate spot for a semi-nervous turista to grab some food and people watch. It felt muy tranquilo. Most of the people looked as if they had been lifted out of a scene from a hot nightclub in Miami or Los Angeles. The girls were dressed sexy and the guys were unabashedly sizing them up while drinking beer or shooting aguardiente; a Colombian liqueur sometimes called firewater.

My job takes me to lots of exciting places; last night it took me to the Marquis Theatre to see Evita (Ricky Martin is one of my guilty pleasures).

As the play was about to start a familiar face sat in the row across the aisle from me – it was none other than Jennifer Lopez, her boy toy Gasparin and her entourage. I could not concentrate on the show because Ms. Lopez was chewing something crunchy and her boy toy was texting throughout the entire play (I consider that really disrespectful to the performers and the audience).
Right before intermission they walked out of the theater and this is what they left behind:

Mexican Independence Day is this Sunday and in celebration we are going full on Mexican at Remezcla this week güeyyyy. For the next seven days Remezcla will be known as ReMEXcla, if you get my drift. Experience Remezcla Música’s RE TV series with City Sessions. On these exclusive episodes, you’ll check out RE artists perform some of their latest tracks on the streets of NY, LA, SF, Chi, Mia, and beyond. For our debut, we present to you Colombia’s electropical group Bomba Estéreo.

At our neighborhood in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg, Bomba Estéreo’s frontwoman Liliana Saumet and guitarist Julián Salazar pay us a visit and get down and funky with two acoustic songs: “El Alma y El Cuerpo” and “Lo Que Tengo Que Decir” off their newest album Elegancia Trópical (out now in Colombia and worldwide in October via Polen Records); acoustic guitar courtesy of Gibson.

Glori, as you’ll recall from Brooklyn Boricua tropical duo D’Marquesina, has started up an underground restaurant serving her original chin chin delicacies in an artsy apartment in Prospect Heights. On May 20th, 1902, Cuba – or phonetically speaking, Coo-Bah – declared its independence. The island nation was starting to recover from the brutal war with Spain and endured a period of American military occupation. While the date is a cause for celebration, the nation was effectively hamstrung by the cruel irony of independence without freedom. To anyone else, this was an expected course (normal being a relative word) for the island nation. In fact, the nation would only receive true independence-but-not-liberty fifty-seven years later. So, who the hell cares about this date anyway? Time to step back and remember…

This is written for anyone who has either never driven Uptown or those who have but didn’t make out too well. You have to understand; driving Uptown takes a whole different mindset. Whether you’re coming from New Jersey, the Bronx or even other parts of Manhattan, realize that once you enter Uptown territory, using whatever bridge, highway, street or avenue that got you here, you better have your A game, if not, it won’t be pretty. It’s not just the locals and cab drivers you have to watch out for but basically everyone on the road. The UPS dudes, the city bus drivers and even the ice cream truck drivers, all those people drive like maniacs.

I visited the 15th annual Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekender this past April. I remember distinctly my very first Viva Las Vegas (VLV) in 2007 and I couldn’t help but notice how things have grown. To call VLV a weekender is a bit of an understatement. VLV lasts for four solid days, plus there’s a plethora of pre and post events; maybe they should shave the “ender” off and just call it “Viva Las Vegas Week.”
VLV is a place you can experience a world flipped on its head in a parallel 1950s universe where thousands of people dressed in character straight from an episode of Happy Days or I Love Lucy (but way cooler and with lots of tattoos). It’s a bit like taking a trip back in time where you get to bring along your Blackberry or iPhone.

Then there is a question that kids and adults ask. What superhero would you be? Everyone has fantasized about being one.
