Colombian Punk: Like Any Good Punk Song, It Begins With Injustice

In the U.S., it’s cool to wear a mohawk, in Colombia, it could be deadly. An in-depth look at Colombia’s punk scene today.

I remember it clearly, or as clearly as any one of us can remember anything. I was at an outdoor café in Parque Lleras in the upscale neighborhood of Poblado in Medellín, Colombia. This was my first visit to Medellín and I had been there just long enough to realize how ridiculous my irrational fears of being kidnapped or killed in a drug war shootout were.

Lleras was an appropriate spot for a semi-nervous turista to grab some food and people watch. It felt muy tranquilo. Most of the people looked as if they had been lifted out of a scene from a hot nightclub in Miami or Los Angeles. The girls were dressed sexy and the guys were unabashedly sizing them up while drinking beer or shooting aguardiente; a Colombian liqueur sometimes called firewater.

(Click Picture Below to Read More)

Mexican Independence Day is this Sunday and in celebration we are going full on Mexican at Remezcla this week güeyyyy. For the next seven days Remezcla will be known as ReMEXcla, if you get my drift. In related news, I love terrible puns and I refuse to apologize for it or ever stop using them. ANYWAY, today we are celebrating the alluring display of vigor that is the Mexican Mustache. First, however, I’d like to clear up any potential misconceptions about the subject matter at hand. While researching images for this post (aka Googling) I was somewhat disconcerted to discover that the top two Google results for “Mexican Mustache” are as follows: (Click Image to Read More)

Tequila has the dubious distinction of being the first alcoholic beverage I had to enact a temporary ban on, due to my tendency to turn into a Chupacabra and terrorize the general populace after one too many. But today is National Tequila Day, so clearly it is a day for government-sanctioned ratchetería. (Click Image to read more)

Mano A Mano: 10 Latin Masturbation Songs

May was National Masturbation Month in the US—a month to raise awareness about the positive effects of masturbation.

We all masturbate. Yes, and that’s not TMI, it’s part of a natural human behavior, so get over it. Everybody does it and it’s ok and if you don’t, well, you should, it’s fun, it’s healthy and it helps prevent the ultimate collapse of human society by zombie apocalypse, or something.

The thing is, if it wasn’t for masturbation we wouldn’t be here today. Think about it, there’s only two main reasons behind the success of this thing they call the internet: free porn and downloadable music. Which means that you probably already surfed your regular triple-x sites and rubbed one off earlier today and that’s why now you’re now checking out this music site. Right? Everybody does it and it’s ok and if you don’t, well, you should, it’s fun, it’s healthy and it helps prevent the ultimate collapse of human society by zombie apocalypse, or something.

Collaborations will be hatched, careers born and beer drunk. Espera, don’t go ahead telling everyone you know just yet, but we got the specs on Glori’s apartment restaurant for ya.
Throughout the beginnings of Remezcla and today, we’ve featured a great chunk of articles that highlight Cuba in its different dimensions (politically, musically, culturally, etc.). Due to Cuba Independence Day among us, we wanna shine light to some of our favorite Cuba articles (or Cubarticles?). You’ll find some Cuba free mixtapes, how to order food at a Cuban bodega, an in-depth look at Cuba’s punk scene, Cuban artists profiles, and so on.
Cuban Independence Day Explained

While the date is a cause for celebration, the nation was effectively hamstrung by the cruel irony of independence without freedom.

On May 20th, 1902, Cuba – or phonetically speaking, Coo-Bah – declared its independence. The island nation was starting to recover from the brutal war with Spain and endured a period of American military occupation. While the date is a cause for celebration, the nation was effectively hamstrung by the cruel irony of independence without freedom. To anyone else, this was an expected course (normal being a relative word) for the island nation. In fact, the nation would only receive true independence-but-not-liberty fifty-seven years later.
It’s the American Spring in Chicago. Hear from the organizers of an anti-NATO show, why resistance efforts are important to them and why its about so much more than the music.

It’s the American Spring in Chicago. NATO delegates are in town and activists from around the world have seized the moment to highlight their causes of social justice. No doubt music has always captured the spirit of a movement, local acts are ready to set the beat for the beat down. Radical comrades Outernational (NYC) will headline a show this Friday night alongside DJ Puerko Pitzotl, The Employees, Graham Czach, and Los Vicios De Papa. Hear from the organizers of this show, why anti-NATO efforts are important to them and why it’s about so much more than the music. (Click Image Above to Read More)

The Uptown Driving Manual Part 1

This is written for anyone who has either never driven Uptown or those who have but didn’t make out too well. You have to understand; driving Uptown takes a whole different mindset. Whether you’re coming from New Jersey, the Bronx or even other parts of Manhattan, realize that once you enter Uptown territory, using whatever bridge, highway, street or avenue that got you here, you better have your A game, if not, it won’t be pretty. It’s not just the locals and cab drivers you have to watch out for but basically everyone on the road. The UPS dudes, the city bus drivers and even the ice cream truck drivers, all those people drive like maniacs.

(Click Image Above to Read More)

Rockabilly & Latinos: A Remixing Case

There’s an increasingly large number of Latinos who’ve adapted the rockabilly lifestyle, significantly in the west coast. Robert Rose travels to Viva Las Vegas, interviews rockabilly DJs, bloggers, and burlesque dancers, and finds out an interesting correlation between hillbilly culture, and Latino …

I visited the 15th annual Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekender this past April. I remember distinctly my very first Viva Las Vegas (VLV) in 2007 and I couldn’t help but notice how things have grown. To call VLV a weekender is a bit of an understatement. VLV lasts for four solid days, plus there’s a plethora of pre and post events; maybe they should shave the “ender” off and just call it “Viva Las Vegas Week.”
VLV is a place you can experience a world flipped on its head in a parallel 1950s universe where thousands of people dressed in character straight from an episode of Happy Days or I Love Lucy (but way cooler and with lots of tattoos). It’s a bit like taking a trip back in time where you get to bring along your Blackberry or iPhone.

(To Read More, Click The Image)

Mother’s Day: Brunch & Regalos For Cheap

This Mother’s Day celebrate with brunch and a gift for under $50. Here we tell you how/where to make that happen.

It’s the time of year to celebrate that woman who carried you for 9 months, has probably cooked more meals for you than any other and likely loves you more than, well, anyone else could, etc…. When it comes down to it, you want to make her feel like a winner, even if you’re ballin’ on a budget.

We’ve sat down and made some executive decisions for you on where to take your mom for Mother’s Day so you don’t have to (we’ve even included gifts and festivities). Also, we limited the affair to $50 –generous considering the size of those student loan payments.

(To Read More Click the Image Above)

Latinos Assemble!

The Avengers killed at the box office this past weekend but it’s a team of white dudes. (One of them is sometimes green.) Where are the Latin superheroes?

There are questions that have been asked since the dawn of man. Why are we here? Does free will truly exist? Why hasn’t he/she called back?

Then there is a question that kids and adults ask. What superhero would you be? Everyone has fantasized about being one. But there is an issue; a lot of the superheroes out there simply don’t look like a lot of us. The Avengers killed at the box office this past weekend – and is really, really awesome – but it’s a team of white dudes. (One of them is sometimes green.) In other words; where are the Latin superheroes? Well, we at Remezcla have compiled a list of superheroes who do in fact, look like us.

(Click Image Above to Read More)
