    Uganda Allows Gays To Meet

The Ugandan government has released a landmark statement, saying that gays are now free to meet, following international criticism of their anti-gay stance.

The Ugandan government has released a landmark statement, saying that gays are now free to meet, following international criticism of their anti-gay stance.

The statement, released on Friday June 22, said the government does not discriminate against people "of a different sexual orientation."

The statement reads: "No government official is (supposed) to harass any section of the community and everybody in Uganda enjoys the freedom to lawfully assemble and associate freely with others.”

Ethics Minister Simon Lokodo signed the statement, despite previous accusations by gay activists of orchestrating a hate campaign and breaking up gay conferences.

Gay activist Frank Mugisha told the Associated Press: “I think we’ve really challenged Lokodo now, as this statement shows. He’s facing the pressure.”

The news follows a police raid on Monday June 18 of a human rights workshop where LGBT activists were present.
