Woman With No Legs Wins Treadmill On The Price Is Right: "You Have To Laugh. It's Hilarious."

The Internet didn't find it so funny when Danielle Perez saw her prizes. But here she shares her side of the story

Danielle Perez didn't think anything was up in March when she took her spot to watch a live taping of The Price is Right in Los Angeles. "They kept telling me, 'If you get called, we'll tell you what to do.'"

Still, her friends insisted she would be rolling down the aisle at The Bob Barker studio. Yes, rolling: The 31-year-old Californian has used a wheelchair since losing her legs in a car accident 11 years ago. Sure enough, she was the first name to be called.

Her chances of getting out of Contestant's Row and onto the stage were looking grim for a while. But a successful bid on an iPad and a fitness tracker in the second half of the show earned her an awkward journey on stage.

Upon winning Perez needed to travel back up the aisle and enter through the side of the stage. "I didn't know where to go," she says. Once on stage she received a warm welcome from Drew Carey. And then the big doors opened, revealing two prizes: A sauna – and a treadmill. Jaws around the continent dropped.

There she was. In a wheelchair. "Being awarded inappropriate prizes on national TV," she says with a giggle. She wasn't upset though. "You have to laugh. It's hilarious."

Twitter users preferred words such as awkward, fail and "extremely inappropriate."

Perez was just 20 when she was hit by a streetcar in San Francisco and lost both her legs. "I was 20. So my life was really just beginning." It's clear she hasn't let the incredible challenge slow her down. "I can still experience joy. I drive. I go out. I do stand-up comedy," she says deadpans.

Still, she does not deny being a little taken aback upon seeing that treadmill. "What am I going to do? I was grateful to be there. Grateful for the prizes offered to me."

She won both prizes, but didn't make it to the Showcase Showdown. (She spun on 75 cents just because she wanted to spin the wheel again.)

Does she have any use for the treadmill? She hopes so. "I'd really like to use prosthetics in the future. I cannot wait. I'm very much looking forward to that day."

Perez doesn't get the public fuss. She won the prizes and, most importantly, she says, "I was very concerned but relieved that my hair looked really good."

And she wasn't too upset about missing the Showcase Showdown. The winner took home a party boat. "What would I do with a party boat?"

Danielle Perez hosts Gentrification, a backyard comedy show on the last Friday of every month in L.A.'s Highland Park.
