There Are Now Just Three Female Cabinet Ministers Remaining

Maria Miller's departure means that just three women remain at the top of British politics.

Following the resignation of Maria Miller the UK now has just three female cabinet ministers. Two other female ministers are also allowed to attend cabinet. We've circled all of them.

Following Maria Miller's resignation as culture secretary over her expenses there are 34 politicians who have the right to attend the cabinet but just five of them (14.6%) are women: Nicky Morgan, Baroness Warsi, Theresa Villiers, Justine Greening and Theresa May.

Out of these Nicky Morgan is not a full cabinet minister and will only attend in her secondary role as minister of state for women. Baroness Warsi is also not a full cabinet minister and has been increasingly sidelined in recent months.

Meanwhile Theresa Villiers leads a small Northern Ireland Office that has devolved many of its powers to the Northern Ireland Assembly, while Justine Greening at the Department for International Development has little to do with the day-to-day running of the UK.

This leaves Theresa May as the only woman in the coalition government running a major government department.

Part of the problem is that there just aren't enough female MPs for the coalition to put in top jobs: just seven out of 56 Liberal Democrat MPs and only 47 out of 303 Conservative MPs are women. Until the parties increase the number of female MPs then they will struggle to promote them to the cabinet.

BuzzFeed has added a listing to this image for Nicky Morgan, the newly-appointed financial secretary to the Treasury who will have the right to attend cabinet in her capacity as minister of state for women. This is because the government has yet to update its own list of ministers with her appointment.
