A man who scaled a wall at the White House earlier this year was shot and killed Tuesday in Pennsylvania after attacking a sheriff's deputy.
Curtis Smith, 34, arrived at the Chester County Justice Center in West Chester and charged past a metal detector late Tuesday morning, Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan told reporters. Once through the metal detector, Smith pulled out a knife and started slashing at a sheriff's deputy, Hogan said.
Another deputy then shot Smith, who was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. Smith was from Coatesville, Pennsylvania.
The deputy suffered cuts to his hand and arm, Hogan said. He was treated at an area hospital, and investigators Tuesday were interviewing the deputy who opened fire.

Smith was previously arrested on March 1 when he scaled a stone wall at a White House vehicle entry point, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported. The Secret Service stopped Smith as he walked across the White House grounds.
At the time, Smith claimed he went to the White House to deliver a message to President Obama. According to the Inquirer, he was charged with unlawful entry, then released in April. He had a hearing in the case scheduled for October.
He was also ordered to stay away from the White House, and to check in with authorities weekly by phone.
Hogan said no one other than the deputy was injured during Tuesday's attack at the courthouse.
"Unfortunately, because of incidents like this across the nation," Hogan added, "we have learned how to deal with an attack in a courthouse."
