The Sun Has Turned Into A Flaming Jack-O-Lantern For Halloween

BOO.

Just in time for Halloween, the sun has turned into a giant, flaming pumpkin head:

Okay so what really happened to produce this image?

The sun put on a spectacular light show with massive light and energy emissions on Oct. 8. Those emissions were then captured by the Solar Dynamics Observatory, which is a satellite orbiting the Earth.

The image isn't just a straight photograph. Rather, it's a recording of "two sets of wavelengths" of energy, which were then colored yellow. The result, as NASA points out, is a "particularly Halloween-like appearance."
