Too many drunk drivers so lets ban cars too!  Why are we punishing responsible gun owners when fools like this mother allowed her arsenal of weapons to be easily accessible to her mentally ill son? This is not about guns. This is about irresponsible behavior. You dont hand car keys to a drunk & if you own guns, lock them up, especially of you live with a mentally ill person!

Come on, be serious man. I am sure you’ve heard of home invasions and burglaries. You don’t need me to make you aware of that, I hope.
I hope I will never have to experience such an event, but in case it would happen, I’d like to know that I have the means to try to defend my family and myself.
If you want to have a serious conversation, fine. If you want to be childish (see your tank + jets bombing reference), thanks but no thanks, it’s not for me. Reasonable line uh? Sure, I am all for it. Now define “Assault rifle” and I’ll see if it’s reasonable or not (my feeling is that you don’t know what you’re actually talking about, but I’d like to give you the benefit of the doubt).
As far as I am concerned a centerfire, semiautomatic rifle is not even the best option for home defense anyway.

If you are actively afraid that an organized group of 3 or 4 drug induced, body armored robbers are going to break in to your home, you should probably: A) Consider a career change. B) Consider geographic relocation. C) Invest in a safe room.  What if a paramilitary group rolls a tank in to your front lawn? You should probably have an RPG as well. What if jets are bombing your home? You should probably invest in that SAM platform.  There is a reasonable line to be drawn. I personally believe that line exists BEFORE Assault Rifle.

What if there is more than one person breaking into your house (say 3 or 4)? What if those people have body armor? What if those people are armed? What if those people are under the influence of drugs that can make them able to cope well enough with a round piercing their flesh that they are able to fire one or several rounds at you before going down?

Explain to me what rounds fired by the military vs. deaths has to do with domestic self defense? How many military style engagements occur domestically? Every story I have EVER heard about a gun being used in self defense involves someone firing either a single warning shot and scaring off the assailant or firing less than 5 shots. Find me a story about a man protecting his home from break-in resulting in a military-style, machine gun fire engagement.  Also, read the second amendment  “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” This is not about you being able to own as many weapons as you want, it’s about a state being able to arm it self against oppression. I still don’t see how this includes the right for an individual to own an weapons of excessive quantity or power (I used the word caliber previously, by this I meant Assault Rifle vs Pistol, not bullet caliber. Excuse me)

It is about guns. It’s also about responsibility. It’s also about mental illness. Tell me why an individual needs to own “an arsenal of guns”. Tell me why an individual needs to own an assault rifle. Give me an example of a situation in which an individual needs to fire multiple rounds in succession. Self defense? Hunting? I’m under the impression that 1-2 shots from a well trained individual will accomplish almost any goal.  Defending owning “an arsenal”, an assault rifle, etc is like saying “I have a right to bear arms, and therefore I have a right to own this fully loaded Surface to Air Missile Platform.  Tell me when it’s practical and I’ll change my mind. And on your “ban cars” note, there are laws in place (DWI, DUI, etc) which are in place to enforce a limitation and legal consequence to driving drunk. So why can we not do the same with firearms? I think it would be ridiculous to BAN GUNS, but maybe reasonable to enforce a limitation and legal consequence on owning excessive quantities or calibers or firearms.
