16 Things HBCU Grads Experience Their First Year Out Of College

Attending an Historical Black College or University makes for a unique undergrad experience. The year following graduation is an even more unique experience. Here are 16 things HBCU grads can relate to.

    1. Finding out there is no "Fried Chicken Wednesday" in the commissary of your new job

    2. Finding out that your co-workers actually go to homecoming for the football game

    3. Forgetting what it's like to talk about race with non-people of color and almost loosing your cool

    4. Then realizing sometimes you just have to let them talk.

    5. Realizing you can't turn up at all the company "functions" like you want to

    6. But yet you still find yourself being the unofficial "dance team captain" at all these same functions

    7. Also the moment you realize professionally you can no longer call a party "DA FUNCTION"

    8. You use to have a safe space where you could speak a tad "ratchet" without being considered "ratchet" but now this happens

    9. And so you spend the majority of your days with this facial expression

    10. But you really don't want to be that black person so you hide it with this

    11. And finally Dubois' Double Consciousness theory from Freshmen Year makes sense

    12. But you also have other problems like having to spend days searching for a hair stylist or barber.

    13. And so in the meantime you wear your hair natural....but hate having to explain "how did you get your hair like that" all day long

    14. However, your biggest pet peeve is having to explain what an HBCU is

    15. And you'll find yourself basically reciting thesis statements on the historical values of HBCU's in modern day society to people who still don't get it

    16. But eventually someone will get it! And you'll bond over campus block parties, greek step shows, and the peach cobbler (that was also served every Wednesday) Damn what is life without chicken and cobbler!
