Bad news Breaking Bad fans: Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul will not guest-star on Better Call Saul, the forthcoming Breaking Bad spin-off Vince Gilligan created with Peter Gould.
"Walt and Jesse will not appear in Season 1," Gould said at the Television Critics Association winter press tour in Pasadena, California, on Saturday. "We want this to stand on its own. We don't want to mislead people in expecting something that's not going to happen. But having said that, everything else is on the table."
Better Call Saul revolves around Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk), the shady lawyer employed throughout the original series by Walter White (Cranston) — although this time, he's calling himself Jimmy McGill.
The series is set six years before the events of Breaking Bad and as co-star Michael McKean noted that Paul's character Jesse "would be in middle school." The producers were quick to add that it's possible the beloved characters could appear in Season 2, which has already been ordered by AMC.
The 10-episode first season of Better Call Saul also stars Jonathan Banks, who reprises his role as Breaking Bad fan favorite Mike Erhmantraut, Rhea Seehorn (House of Lies), Patrick Fabian (The Last Exorcism), and Michael Mando (Orphan Black).
