The Oscars Paid Homage To "Smash" And It Was Perfect

The Oscars gave all the heart tonight.

Jennifer Hudson sang the 2015 Academy Award's In Memoriam song, honoring the artists the film community has lost in 2014.

What you may not know is she sang "I Can't Let Go," an original song from the second season of NBC's much-missed television series Smash.

Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, co-writers and producers of the 2015 Academy Awards, wrote the song for the series in 2012.

Debra Messing, one of the stars of Smash, gave the song a shout-out:

Do any #smash fans recognize the song #JHUD Sang on the Oscars?

But of course, fans of the series had immediately recognized the song:

The subtext of this In Memoriam is that Smash will NEVER DIE. #Oscars

We did it, gays. We got SMASH to the Oscars.
