The first time most of us encountered Michael Cera he was a baby faced 15-year-old snuggled up on an air mattress fitted with generic sports-themed sheets in the pilot episode of Arrested Development. When the new episodes premiere on Netflix on May 26, George Michael Bluth will be a college freshman at UC Irvine — but since it's in Orange County, he won't be far from home.

In the intervening years, Cera, like his trademark character, has been schooled — but not in a James Franco way. In fact, you might call Michael Cera the Anti-Franco. The actor, who turns 25 this year, has foregone college and instead spent the past few years embedded as an apprentice with a few of his role models — learning writing, acting and directing straight from the source.

Cera lived with Chilean director Sebastian Silva and his family in South America for three months during the summer of 2011. He spent a couple weeks holed up in an Upper East Side diner with 82-year-old author and screenwriter Bruce Jay Friedman (Splash, The Heartbreak Kid) this past winter, adapting the man's short story for his own directorial debut. To top it all off, he also spent several months in the Arrested Development writers' room, working alongside the same folks who wrote him into the model home attic in the first place.

"Whatever happened with you and my driver at Sundance?" Michael Cera inquires, like a kind yenta, as I'm ushered into a room at a Sheraton hotel in Universal City by a publicist in April. In January, Four months earlier, I'd accidentally met Cera's driver at a sushi restaurant in Park City. "Alex, right? I liked that guy. I had high hopes for you two — just because I would be so central to that story."

Cera doesn't really need another central role — besides writing for and acting in new episodes of Arrested Development, he's starring in two short films for the YouTube channel Jash (the second of which, Gregory Go Boom premiered on Wednesday) as well as two feature films that premiered at Sundance (one of them, Crystal Fairy, will be in theaters July 12). He's also appearing alongside Seth Rogen and James Franco in This Is The End (out June 12).

Of all of these, the most highly anticipated, by far, is Cera's reprisal as George Michael. There were rumors for a while that Cera was reluctant to return to the role — the last holdout among the cast members for the Netflix reboot — but when production began Cera hadn't just signed on to appear in the series, he was helping to write it too.

No one really planned for Cera to be in the Arrested Development writers' room. He says he just showed up the day that they were writing for George Michael and he was curious, so he hung around. "I really wanted to be in there just 'cause it seemed like I had the chance to be. I really wanted to see what goes on in there and be around those guys," Cera says.

At the Television Critics Association in January, series creator Mitch Hurwitz said it wasn't long before Cera became indispensable: "Suddenly we were very dependent on Michael Cera being in the writer's room. He completely understood this complex story. He added to it. He pitched in character. It became clear — it's like, wow, this is like his first language, Arrested Development."

Hurwitz, Jim Vallely and Dean Lorey had been working on the story since November 2011. Cera joined them in June 2012, with filming beginning in August.

When I meet him nine months later, Cera still has seen only the first two episodes, even though the entire series is scheduled to debut on Netflix just a few weeks later — Hurwitz is still editing the rest.

To hear Cera tell it, the whole process was kind of like that — down to the wire, operating at a level of dysfunction befitting the Bluth family. "We were writing basically through July and August, just really casually, and then it got to the point where you looked at the schedule and you were like, okay they're shooting Maeby's episode next week and there is literally no script," Cera says.

On some days, Cera says, "Mitch would be on set and, you know, call the writers room and say, 'Stop what you're doing, I need this scene because we're about to shoot it.'" The show's writers would then have about a half hour to write the scene. "Jim Vallely calls those 'fireman missions.' Like you get a call and you have to jump into action and do it."

He adds: "Those were really fun moments. But I was so happy that it was not my responsibility, in those moments, to get it done. I just had to be in there and try to contribute something."

The distinction between contributing and controlling a shoot is one Cera has become more familiar with recently, as he's writing and directing his own projects. When he speaks of Hurwitz, it's with a mix of admiration and bewilderment that suggests Cera learned both what to do and what not to do from watching the veteran show runner operate up close.

"He is very dangerous in the way he schedules things. I don't think he means to be, but he'll really push himself into a corner with production aspects and with unwinding stories and fights his way out of it," Cera says. "You have to put your faith in him because you're not going to do it any other way — he's leading the thing."

It sounds scary — until you remember that faith in Hurwitz helped lead Cera to where he is today.

By "canceled," I don't mean that they ran for eight seasons then ended. Or just ended. I mean a network either abruptly decided not to renew, or there were so many creative differences that it couldn't go on, and was then canceled. OK, you've been warned!

Firefly

When it went off the air: Canceled in 2002, just three months after the first episode aired.
Why it was canceled: When Fox pulled the plug, it was ranked 125th in the Nielsen ratings and averaged 4.48 million viewers. So, yeah, the ratings blew, but it remains a cult classic.
Potential for revival, on a scale of 1-10: 8, but not as a TV show. Serenity was a film spinoff of the series, and creator Joss Whedon has alluded to the idea that there may be another installment coming. Ya know, after he's done with a zillion other things.

Dead Like Me

When it went off the air: In 2004, after two seasons.
Why it was canceled: Creator Bryan Fuller, who left after five episodes into Season 1, stated that the show was terminated because of "a loss of quality and a sense the problems would continue."
Potential it could be revived, on a scale of 1-10: -5. Aside from the fact that it sounded like a poor work environment on set, Mandy Patinkin is currently booked on Homeland, and a film version of the show was released in 2009. It's dead... like me, after realizing it won't ever come back.

Freaks and Geeks

When it went off the air: In 2000 on NBC, after airing only twelve episodes of the eighteen episode order. A fan campaign persuaded NBC to air three additional episodes, and the series was aired in full on Fox Family during syndication.
Why it was canceled: Freaks and Geeks was ranked 93rd in the ratings race. Hey, it's better than 94th... right?
Potential it could be revived, on a scale of 1-10: 0. The unofficial spinoff was a show called Undeclared, which centered around college freshmen, and was also canceled after one season. But they did have a photoshoot reunion in 2012, if that's any consolation.

Friday evening, an MLB umpire elevated this Mariners-Rangers outing from routine ballgame into paradoxically cruel metaphor for human life. It all happened on this "double play."

Did that look like a regular double play to you? Look again. First baseman Mitch Moreland reaches out for the throw from second, at which point the ball is stolen by pitcher Justin Grimm.

Grimm obviously and inexplicably swipes the ball away before Moreland can reach it. Ump don't care. Ump's like, "Great reach, what did you guys think of that Gatsby flick, idk." THE UMP CALLED THE RUNNER OUT.

It gets even better. Even if Grimm hadn't intercepted the throw for no godly reason other than that he could, Moreland's foot came off the bag — meaning that Mariners hitter Jesus Sucre should've been safe regardless.

We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks hits theaters today. It's not receiving overwhelmingly positive reviews, and just last night, WikiLeaks itself released an annotated transcript of the film, pointing out what it calls factual errors and instances of selective editing.

Back in January, when the Alex Gibney (Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer, Taxi to the Dark Side) film premiered at Sundance, one of the ex-WikiLeak staffers featured the documentary talked about what Gibney got right, and reflected on the historical significance of the leak itself.

James Ball worked for Wikileaks for three months. Ball, who now focuses on data journalism at the Guardian, has since written about his disillusionment with the organization. He spoke about We Steal Secrets during a panel "Out of Sight (and Outside the Law)" at Sundance.

"I think, in many ways, the most significant contributions [of the WikiLeaks] may be the ones we don't discuss now. If Manhunt was the story of one thread which led to Bin Laden, the systematic picture from WikiLeaks — and I think the film is good at revealing that — was the consequence of the thousands that didn't."

Ball recalled some of the horrors contained in documents leaked to the organization. "We found 1,300 detailed medical reports assembled by U.S. soldiers of horrific torture being committed by Iraqi Army soldiers on detainees — electric shocks to the genitals, drills through the knees, untreated gunshot wounds — and, time and again, under the Bush and Obama administrations, more prisoners were handed in to the custody of these people knowingly, with that evidence. That's a war crime."

Revelations like those, though, were why WikiLeaks was so important. "I think these are incredibly important stories — incredibly significant, but incredibly hard to face for countries that like to think of themselves as having a moral purpose, being sort of better than that," Ball said.

As a result, he suggested, the focus of the story of WikiLeaks shifted "to embassies being rude about each other, to the actual story of the leak itself — and I wonder whether that was because the other questions were too difficult. "

The film does a good job, Ball said, of humanizing of Bradley Manning, the serviceman accused of providing the classified information to WikiLeaks. There can be an instinct to reduce whistleblowers like Manning to some single, defining quality. "He's either the selfish, ridiculous person who put his nation at risk, a traitor, or a courageous hero," Ball said. "I think what the film does is remind you is remind you that Manning was a human being — a three dimensional person."

"Whoever was talking in the chat logs to Adrian Lamo was clearly an incredibly idealistic person who was appalled at what they were seeing, and who knew they could have made a lot of money with what they had. It wasn't that they didn't understand the value of choosing to do something for the greater good. But to do such an isolating act," Ball said. "You're going to be probably somebody who has already been isolated by the people around you."

He added, "I think that Manning comes out of the film fantastically well — and I think he should." Manning's trial is scheduled to begin June 3. We Steal Secrets is in theaters now.

Tonight, the Indiana Pacers and Miami Heat are engaged in a brutally fought Game 2. At the end of the third quarter, things reached a fever pitch: the Pacers' Paul George drove on LeBron James and then dunked all over Chris "Birdman" Andersen.

Of course, LeBron didn't take this lying down: he responded with a buzzer-beating three-pointer that cut the Pacers' lead to two.
