Since everyone is throwing their opinions around, I thought I’d throw in my experience. During my high school years, my dad was the director of purchasing for a national restaurant chain. I accompanied him on a number of business trips. I’ve been to slaughterhouses and meat processing plants. I’ve seen cows, chickens, turkeys and pigs tied or grouped up and slaughtered by machines, and I’ve seen how their bodies are stripped to the bone. It’s gruesome. There is nothing pleasant about their lives or deaths. I cried like a baby every time I saw them die because I’m a pansy-ass girl. I couldn’t eat anything for a day and a half the first time. I couldn’t eat meat without getting physically sick for months after each visit. And yet… I eat meat now. For several reasons, mainly because bacon is fucking delicious and I don’t have the time/money/willpower to support a vegetarian lifestyle (I wouldn’t go full vegan because dairy cows can have pretty decent lives, plus, milkshakes!). And because no matter how much I cried, the animals still died on schedule. I completely understand why some people choose a meat-free lifestyle and I support them, but I don’t think it makes them superior to meat eaters.  So, anyway, that’s my experience with the meat industry. I have no sympathy for fish.

Dairy cows do not live decent lives, and the dairy industry directly supports the veal industry. I’m not going to hate on you for your lifestyle or anything, I just wanted to give you some information.

When I cut meat out of my diet, I had some difficulties with my shopping budget and finding new recipes. There are actually a whole bunch of vegetarian and vegan blogs that can help you to cook tasty, inexpensive food. Also, farmer’s markets are a wonderful way to save money and help the local community.  I kind of understand the whole willpower thing. When I became a vegetarian, I needed moral support at the beginning which I just didn’t get. Not because I wanted to eat meat again, mind you, but because the experience was surprisingly isolating. I’d show up for some social event and there’d be nothing that I could eat, so I’d have to leave early. Sometimes when I said I was vegetarian because we were ordering food I’d get a diatribe about how stupid I was being. People would mock me, tell me stories about slaughtering animals (especially turtles) and encourage me to eat meat again. The reality is that meat-eaters also tout the superiority of their diet. They are sometimes cruel to people who make different choices.  I don’t agree with you about eating meat, but I give you credit for sharing your story without mocking anyone.

Thank you. Anyone whose attitude is, “All meat eaters [aka 99% of human history] are stupid and selfish and murderers” doesn’t want to engage in any kind of conversation. Convert or be a terrible person forever. I certainly agree that most mass-produced meat practices are in need of a severe overhaul, but veganism (and, honestly, even healthy eating) is a decision of privilege. Instead of telling people how horrible they are for eating tacos, how about you work on making fresh produce affordable?
