In Rowling’s commencement speech to Harvard she talks about one of her greatest formative moments being her work in her early 20s as a researcher for African research department of Amnesty International. She says that this experience greatly influenced the Harry Potter and goes on to detail some of the personal experiences she had with victims of totalitarian regimes. She saw letters from, read testimonials written by, saw images of injuries of and worked with victims of totalitarian regimes. Therefore I would argue that the portrayal of the wizarding world as a totalitarian regime was quite intentional. Just because Harry Potter is a so called “children’s book” (although with the number of adult readers, its hard to call it that) it can still have a purposeful deeper message.
