People were just starting to develop and experiment with transceivers (something that can both transmit and receive radio messages) in the 20’s. Essentially, they were making large walkie-talkies.

A man by the name of W. W. Macfarlane used this stylish piece of tech to speak to his wife, who was more than 500 yards away, while his chauffeur drove him around.
