As much as I love the game of football, and all that it has taught me, I am sad and worried that the game itself will be no more, if there isn’t the right type of care taken for these boys… The game is getting faster, and the player is getting bigger and stronger… If you want for these head injuries to decrease, the simple thing to do is to take away the pads. Seriously. Look at Rugby players. They can take some of the worlds most vicious hits, and they continue to play, because there is nothing “protecting” their heads from devastating injuries. There are so many alternatives that the NFL can take that will trickle down to the Pop Warner leagues, that all they have to do is take the first step! Foam and plastic has proven that it can NO LONGER protect the player from serious injury… If anything, they need to either get rid of the helmets, or go with leather, like in the early days of football. Although the NFL can do so much about it, they refuse to! And the only way that things will change is when SOMEONE on one of the 32 National Football League Franchises takes a hit, AND ends up hospitalized or dead. Unlike the NFL, the NHL did exactly what needed to be done when the first and ONLY fan passed away cause of a puck that got in the crowd. Since that 1 and only death of a fan, the glass was raised, and nets has been put at the ends to keep the puck from going directly in the crowd… does pucks still get up there? Yes! But you don’t hear about any fans dying, do you? So, now, its all a sit and wait until change finally starts to happen. Teaching ALL the techniques to prevent head injuries is just like putting a band-aid on a gaping wound. THINGS MUST CHANGE, AND NOW!!!
