This ’90s Wedding Decor Is All That

Twenties to Sixties-style weddings have been done. The High-Street Bride’s Guide author Samantha Birch says it’s time to bring on the Nineties…

If the buzzwords on your big day are relaxed, nostalgic and ear-to-ear giddy (and, um, whose aren't?) then the Nineties is the theme for a big-day bash stacked to the I-can-reach-them-in-these-platforms rafters with kitsch, colourful details and OMG-I-had-those memories…

You read up on the outfits already. Now here's the decor.

    THE COLOUR SCHEME

The Nineties were unabashed champions of colour—from neon LA Gear trainers to rainbow-coloured slinkies, and those orange-and-blue trackie bottoms (thank you, Mel C). Think my-eyes-my-eyes acid brights in green, pink, yellow and orange, or pops of I-can-see!-it's-a-miracle! red, yellow, lime green and baby blue.

    THE FLOWERS

Florals were big in the Nineties—all over our clothes and in our hair. Take inspiration from decade-poster-girl Drew Barrymore with lots of giant daisies—on your head, in your bouquet, as centrepieces—or pick your flowers based on your big-day colour scheme.

    THE CAKE

You could do a neon cake. You could go for one that's got rainbow-coloured sponge on the inside. Yes, you could do any of these things. But why would you, when you could do this?

    INVITATIONS

You. Are Going. To Have So. Much. Fun With This.

Nineties motifs? Cassettes, VHS, floppy disks, Walkmans, Gameboys, SNES, early mobile phones (er, Nokia 3310, anyone?), early iPods, Tamagotchi… Take your pick.

    TABLE NAMES

So many movies and TV shows. So few tables. Pick a few faves that hit home for you and your hubby-to-be and use the posters as table names – and on the table plan – or go for more minimalist versions.

Movies: Bill and Ted (Excellent Adventure or Bogus Journey? Commence friendship-risking argument), Mrs Doubtfire, My Girl, Look Who's Talking, Wayne's World, Cruel Intentions, Jurassic Park, Beauty and The Beast, The Lion King, Aladdin, Toy Story, She's All That, 10 Things I Hate About You, Never Been Kissed, American Pie, Romy and Michele's High-School Reunion, Romeo + Juliet, Clueless… Is there a problem here?

TV: Beavis and Butthead, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Clarissa Explains It All, Daria, Dino-saurs, Fresh Prince, Friends, Rugrats, Saved by the Bell, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, The Simpsons (I learned all my life lessons from seasons one to five), Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles, Ren & Stimpy, The X-Files, Kenan and Kel… Who loves [insert your name here]? [Hubby's name] loves [insert your name here]!

Bonus points for place names styled to look like TY beanie heart tags perched on glasses.
