12 Roadside Restaurants That Are Always Worth Pulling Over For

Thank you, America. You’ve given us so many delicious detours. Explore the country in a 2015 Hyundai Sonata because there’s a lot to see, and eat.

1. Czech Stop (West, TX)

Anyone who has driven the Dallas —> Austin route on I-35 knows that this delectable destination is downright required. Established in 1983, the bakery recently made national headlines when it became a place of refuge during the 2013 plant explosion and fire in West, Texas.

2. Johnson's Corner (Johnstown, CO)

Anyone who has driven up I-25 toward Fort Collins has encountered the buttery beacon of hope called Johnson's Corner. The truck-stop-slash-restaurant-slash-wedding-cake-bakery has been open 24 hours a day since 1952.

3. Superdawg Drive-In (Chicago, IL)

SuperDawg is a must-stop if you're dipping through Chicago — but don't expect to be dipping in ketchup when you visit. (Nailed it.) This iconic drive-in doesn't even put ketchup on its "everything" hot dogs, claiming traditional hot dog "sandwiches" are "messed up" by the "abomination" that is ketchup.

4. Tony’s I-75 Restaurant (Birch Run, MI)

No one leaves this Michigan landmark hungry. Although it's best known for its 1-lb BLT, you can stop off at Tony's for a Towering Banana Split. Each is made with a half gallon of ice cream.

5. Iowa 80 (Walcott, IA)

Most people stop here. A mammoth rest stop along I-80 (get it?), Iowa 80 serves over 5,000 people a day. You'll find a handful of familiar fast-food options here as well as a dining option unique to the rest stop — Iowa 80 Kitchen.

6. Buc-ee's (New Braunfels, TX)

In 2012, a Buc-ee's rest stop was awarded Best Bathroom in America in a poll by Cintas, making it a MUST-stop for weak bladders all across Texas. Although it's not really a restaurant, it has all the road food you can dream of, including homemade queso and salsa.

7. Moody's Diner (Waldoboro, ME)

If you're feeling dreary while headed up U.S. Route 1, make a stop at this "not-quaint-on-purpose" diner. People have been ordering slices of pies and sleeping them off in the nearby cabins since 1927. It's an American tradition!

8. Paul Bunyan's Cook Shanty (Wisconsin Dells, WI)

Picking up some buttermilk donuts from Paul Buyan's is the perfect way to conclude a trip to the Dells. The restaurant stays true to its name by serving hearty lumberjack breakfasts and hosting a lumberjack sporting competition.

9. Alabama Jacks (Key Largo, FL)

Exclusive to those navigating the tropical roads of the Keys, this place is as much a dive as it is a paradise. If you're hungry for a taste of the sea, try their blackened dolphin and crab cakes.

10. Tad's Chicken 'N Dumplins (Troutdale, OR)

Seated above the Sandy River just off I-84, this local favorite has been drawing in hungry stomachs for over 80 years. Anyone on a long drive to or from Portland knows the menu provides some much-appreciated home cookin'.

11. Herby-K's (Shreveport, LA)

Taking I-20 through the American South? Dropping into Shreveport for some deep-fried southern seafood is a must. Herby-K's has been around since 1936 and is a well-known respite for Southern road trippers.

12. In-N-Out Burger (CA)

Arguably the most obsession-evoking regional chain in the country, In-N-Out Burger has been doing its thing since 1948. Although the chain has expanded to other states, it's forever a Californian staple.

Drive across the country in a 2015 Hyundai Sonata. You can pull over in one too.
