2. Because mystery.
The field of neuroscience is growing exponentially. Of all the sciences, neuroscience has a least known facts, and is the most mysterious organ of a living being.
3. Because awesome.
The names of the brain regions are so cool to mention to people. You just sound so smart.
Medulla oblongata, arcuate fasciculus, dentate gyrus, nucleus accumbens, etc…
Honestly, if you were out for drinks and wanted to get with a girl, you could impress her by mentioning these structures (hopefully the girl isn’t a neuroscientist or something) because really, would any of these weird names really stick in her head? Nope.
4. Because mindblown.
Did you know that your tongue actually doesn’t have separate regions for different tastes? All the taste buds on your tongue can encode all 5 tastes: salty, sweet, bitter, sour, umami (some Asian thing).
Also, did you know that there’s a specific region in your brain that codes human faces? So if you damage that part of your brain, you can’t tell the difference between your mom, your cat, or your hat. (The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and Other Clinical Tales by Oliver Sacks is a good read. The man thought his hat was his wife for Pete’s sake!!!!)
5. Because art.
Who says science isn’t art? Look at this beautiful image of neurons.
6. Because smart.
“What do you study?”
7. Because life.
Without the brain, you wouldn’t be alive to see this adorable, ADORABLE cat gif.
