I think some of the high schoolers are expressing this concern because they think that rules and regulations for jewelry in sports should theoretically apply more strictly in the Olympics. In other words, if they’re not allowed to wear jewelry in high school sports, why should it be allowed in a more serious arena? A safety concern is a safety concern all the same. [Legal issues, lawsuits, and whatnot are a completely different story.] In any case, I don’t believe these high schoolers think that they can even begin compare to themselves to the Olympians. They watch the games precisely because they can watch their heroes, the best athletes in the world.
