3 Things The US Can Do To Stop North Korea

The recent United Nations report on North Korea has brought to light massive human rights atrocities within the nation. The question now is what can be done? What can the US do to help end atrocities in North Korea?

1. Support a UN Security Council resolution to refer North Korean perpetrators to the International Criminal Court (ICC)

The ICC is designed to prevent leaders from hiding behind sovereignty commit mass atrocities populations.

2. Pressure China not to veto any such resolution that will bring the perpetrators to justice.

China is seen as the only ally North Korea has and will try to protect them from prosecution on international level. China should to recognize their responsibility not to veto resolutions on matters of mass atrocities lest it be responsible for aiding the continuation of the violence.

3. Close Guantanamo Bay

Many people see US treatment of inmates in Guantanamo Bay as similar to North Korean treatment of their people. US policy can’t afford to be hypocritical or opposed where international human rights law is concerned.
