These states are among those with the most expensive filing fees, paperwork, and waiting periods.

The worst state for a divorce is Vermont. Couples must live apart for a mandated time frame of six months. A couple needs to have a year's residency before a divorce is granted. Then the couple must go through a three month 'decree nisi' period.
Nebraska
One of the worst states for divorce cases is Nebraska as the filing fee is $157. The frustration is the long waiting period as it usually takes 420 days for a case to process. To obtain a divorce, a year's residency is required.
California
To obtain a divorce in California, you pay a fee of $395. This was one of the first states to provide no-fault divorce, but it can take 360 days for the divorce to processed.
Arkansas
For $165, you can file for a divorce in Arkansas. The processing time is 540 days, making Arkansas one of the most frustrating states for a divorce. Arkansas makes obtaining a no-fault divorce difficult with the long waiting period and a mandatory 18-month period of separation. If there is co-habitation during that time, you need to start the process over.
South Carolina

New York
New York is one of the worst states for divorce with a filing fee of $335 with a one-year processing time period. New York does require a marital breakdown of six months.
Rhode Island
For $120 you can file for a divorce in Rhode Island. The minimum processing time is 510 days.
Since the divorce process is expensive and frustrating, consider getting a divorce in a state like Arizona as they have affordable filing rates and lower processing times from other states.
