Rutgers Student Weeps After Being Sentenced To 30 Days For Bias Crime
Dharun Ravi will serve 30 days in prison for spying on Tyler Clementi while he kissed a man, broadcasting it online with a webcam, driving Clementi to kill himself. Ravi was facing up to 10 years for committing a hate crime, but was convicted of the much less severe charges of bias intimidation and invasion of privacy.

summerkindofgirl 11 months agoWhile I agree with therblig, I still feel like this is a very light punishment. Sure, he will have the long lasting consequences, but what he did was wrong. I honestly wouldn’t know what I would sentence him if I was the judge, but it wouldn’t be less than 30 days.

christinap12 11 months agoHe is guilty of spying however, he can’t be the only person to blame in TC’s death. TC’s parents practically disowned him when he came out to them, and 2 weeks later he was off to college. It had to be an overwhleming experience and he just couldn’t handle it. Ravi’s actions were the final straw to all of TC’s suffering.

therblig 11 months agoironically, his invasion of clementi’s privacy is now his own cross to bear. when he reapplies to college, or applies for a job, or even asks someone out on a date, he’s going to get googled (or binged), and the first thing that’s going to come up will be his involvement in the death of another. good luck with that.

Where is the line between media, paparazzi, and invasion of privacy? I don’t know much about this case, but from what I gather here, if he could see it, so could others. Unless there is more to this story than what is posted here, its ridiculous that any of this is going on.

Fiona G. 11 months agoThere is an element of entitlement/responsibility that really bothers me in this case, as if homosexuality is an element that needs to be sussed out and exposed for the safety and good of others. Imagine if Tyler had been with a woman. Ravi would not have done anything beyond high five him. This kid has not taken responsibility for his defining role in Tyler’s suicide; he refused a plea deal and has not apologized to the Clementi family. To me, his actions and punishment are symptomatic of an underlying homophobia that still runs deep in our society despite recent developments.
