Plus Size Model Illustrates Warped Image Of Women In Fashion Industry
Depressing statistics presented by a beautiful woman. PLUS Magazine teamed up with model Katya Zharkova to point out the ridiculously distorted image of women in fashion. WARNING: There’s some voluptuous, not-safe-for-workish booty.

Giovanni Lido a year ago“Twenty years ago the average fashion model weighed 8% less than the average woman. Today she weighs 23% less.” This is true because the average population has gotten so much fatter!

elizabethe7 a year agoThese are still Photoshopped. They left the major creases there, but if you zoom in all the way on the first picture, you can tell they shopped out stretch marks on her breast.

Bugs Diva a year agoBeauty is in the eye of the beholder, but health isn’t. It also should be noted that fitness is actually more important than weight - if you are a little overweight but you still exercise, you’ll likely live a longer and happier life than a tiny person who sits around all day.

Nicholas a year agoA) Fat is not a relative term. If you have a double chin and rolls of fat on your stomach, you are fat. It does not matter if the average woman also has a double chin and rolls of fat. B) The use of dress sizes as a measure of model body size is horrible flawed as sizes have inflated with bodies to sell more dresses. (vanity sizing.) A Size 8 in the 50s is a size 00 today! http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_LnO5LH1Gt94/TJZ-p_D6CYI/AAAAAAAAA8s/Wad5YdZOitw/s1600/Shrinking-Size-Graph-mdn.jpg

UNIVERSAL CORPORATION INC. a year agoI’m really more concerned about the effect that this is having on small girls. Almost half of 9 and 10 year old girls prefer to be on a diet. What kind of world are we living in??

myacupcake a year agoJust in case you hadn’t noticed- 99% of what is considered beautiful in this country for the human body is the Thin Body Type. Just what exactly are thin women complaining about here? When you look in the mirror you see the same thin image plastered around every advertisement and media platform in the US. The girl in this advertisement does not. Being thin is always “in”. This advertisement is trying to bring awareness to an actual disorder - Anorexia and Bulemia. If you don’t suffer from those issues and are genetically blessed to be thin with a high metabolism you should be thanking your lucky stars not crying over something that has nothing to do with you.

JEdoubleSSSS a year agoI have issues with this. So many people have been posting this all over the internet. Yes, the women in these photos are larger than the majority of models, but I still consider them to be slender. Also, these women are still airbrushed, this still a distorts body image. I understand the intentions here and I’m really excited about that, I just think the goal of the idea still needs some tweaking. I want to see a woman that is 5’4ish and apple or pear shaped.

Melonnaise a year agoThe rolls and belly don’t look good to me, though. That’s just as unappealing as excessively jutting hipbones. Somewhere around size 6-10 is ideal, in my opinion. Depending on the individual woman’s height and frame, of course.

AdventureNeckbeard a year agoWould bonk… meh I enjoy women with flesh you know, not too much but just enough. And she’s not fat to me. I’m sure she doesn’t wobble when she walks, fat people wobble and waddle.

corys2 a year agoI think both the models are beautiful and it seems that is the point of the embracing photos, I guess they didn’t show the smaller one’s face because Zharkova was the star model or something? A lot of people are commenting saying that these are shaming thin women?
Most high fashion models are thin because that is their natural body type, (however there are also some that are unhealthily thin), and they are healthy. However things like magazines and TV and the like present NOTHING BUT these types of women as the ideal (since in most cases no alternative is presented), no mind is payed towards different body types. THAT is what (I think) the message of these pictures are, they aren’t trying to push being fat or shame being thin. -

dirtmcgirt a year agoI’m not sure why we are being told to celebrate the average when the average is unhealthy. Models are underweight now so there should be more overweight models? If people wanted to see overweight models in magazines, there would be overweight models. It’s all about the bottom line

caulfieldkid a year agoAs someone who has been taunted for being too thin and told that I “need to eat more,” some of you should think about what you’re doing before you criticize the thin model’s body. It would be rude if someone went up to an overweight person in public and said, “You need to lose some weight,” right? Same goes for thin people. We have feelings too.

Meghan a year agoThis doesn’t address the fact that people (not just women, but ALL Americans on average) are a hell of a lot fatter than they were 20 years ago. Or even ten. Driving past my old high school I noticed the kids there are way chunkier than my class. There’s an obesity epidemic going on and it needs to be addressed because it’s sending healthcare costs through the roof and endangering people’s livelihoods. So, yes, anorexia is a problem. A big one. But we’re living in a society of extremes. And neither one is good. This has nothing to do with the supposed “plus” size model. She looks perfectly healthy (and gorgeous) to me. Taller women, especially, should have lovely hips and curves. But people don’t exercise anymore! They don’t eat well! And then they turn on their televisions and see these itty bitty super models or actresses who don’t eat. Is it any wonder that they either (a) shove more food in their face and set of a shame spiral or (b) start starving themselves?
