I think that it’s kind of backwards to think that two guys living together can’t be friends. In a way, making their relationship a romantic one just makes a bunch of hetero guys even more insecure of their sexuality. It’s bad enough they have to qualify everything remotely approaching a human connection by saying, “No homo.”

I’m all for gay rights and I think that gays should have the right to marry. Having said that the creators of sesame street said that bert and ernie aren’t gay, so why would they get married?

Nice trying to abduct bert and ernie to a cause.  What about the the notion that bert and ernie imply that people can live together in harmony being completely different or never caving into a societal norm such as marriage. Hate to break it to ya but there are more single people in the world than there are married people. I just wish the gov would stop subsidizing and giving breaks to “married couples” gay or straight as its totally unfair to us “singles” and those of us who wish to remain so.

I think people are losing their grip on reality. Bert and Ernie are puppets. They are neither hetero nor homosexual. They’re just puppets.

I dunno. Kids go to marriages all the time. The “Maria and Luis get married” story arc is one of the best and most memorable stories of all time - not just for Sesame Street but for all of television. But I don’t think that Bert and Ernie getting married is the best way to add another layer of diversity to this show. Mostly because they aren’t gay. The creators and writers have been asked if Bert and Ernie were gay and the response made it quite clear they weren’t gay - they were, in fact, puppets. I think it would probably be best if they had some sort of a ‘my two mommies’/’my two daddies’ thing for either a real child or a muppet friend. Maybe even have Dan Savage on and get him to talk about all the different ways people love eachother. That’s the message we should send - not a fake puppet marriage but a real live discussion with real live people. But I will remind everyone about the shitfit the religious conservatives threw about the two minute segment on ‘Postcards from Buster’ four years ago about him visiting a small farm that just happened to be run by a lesbian couple and their daughter. Threatened to pull PBS’s funding over that one, they did. Mr. Rogers would have found a way to do it. Sesame Street can to.

During my childhood, Ernie & Bert have been two of my favorite Sesame Street characters, and I can tell you then the idea of marriage never crossed my mind at that time. This idea would only satisfy adults (or not), cause more controversy, and would honestly be a waste of whatever time is spent on getting the two “married”. Spend your time on more important matters and not whether or not puppets on a children’s show are able to marry.

This is fucking stupid THIS IS A KIDS SHOW PEOPLE! Stop forcing our kids to grow up, marriage is a adult thing and should be on adult shows. And whats with americans assuming people are always gay because the way they live there lives? Am I gay if I move in with a friend whose a guy? Is my gay friend whose a girl straight if she moves in with me? Come on just because two puppets who are supposed to be men show each other a little affection dosent mean there gay, women do this all the time but no one suspects a thing.
