Insanely Racist Cake That Screams When You Slice It
I dare you to find something that is NOT disturbing about this. This is a performance art piece by Swedish provocateur Makode Linde, described by the Swedish press as a N***er Cake, that he claims is meant to raise awareness of female circumcision in Africa. And that’s the Swedish Minister of Culture taking a slice out of him in the photos. Not the best photo op for a Swedish politician.

Ride a year agoThe piece uses traditional racist stereotypical imagery of Africans to challenge the PC politicians and dignitaries present about whether “cultural sensitivity” is any excuse for allowing the practice to continue. Africans remain as “Other” as they’ve ever been, and as they are when depicted stereotypically like this, as long as the practice is tolerated. Their squirming and confused, nervous laughing at the ludicrous spectacle, and the indulgence of the (black) artist’s tasteless request that the first cut be made around the genital area highlights the limpness of these “culturally sensitive” types against abhorrent practices they would not accept if the perpertrators were not of an ethnic minority. But everyone on here seems to have seen a bunch of “stuffy old crackers” and condemned them all and, more importantly, the artist’s piece without understanding it. Not that I like the piece, but I am disappointed that the standard of discourse has been so low.

corys2 a year agoAnyone trying to justify this, are you serious? No fucks given if it’s supposed to be an artistic statement.
The artistic statement failed when this MALE artist decided it was a good idea to completely appropriate the experience of female genital mutilation and imitate screams of pain that real women have actually experienced and continue to experience. It failed COMPLETELY when the Swedish minister (who was invited to cut the cake at its genitals by the way)and a room full of priveledged whiteys LAUGHED at it like it was a joke. Yeah its an awkward creepy situation and some people laugh to diffuse, but they were laughing at an imitation of real women’s pain. Female genital mutilation is not a joke, everything about this is fucked up. -

Benjamin Sapiens a year agoIt should be pointed out that the artist is actually a black Sweede of African descent himself, whose work uses shock value to confront the issue of racism. That fact certainly makes it vastly less racist than it would be if a white person had done it. Whether or not this art has any value other than being deliberately offensive, though, is another question entirely.

patriciac5 a year agoThis is actually a really powerful piece. The cake itself, the participants even us watching it. Really brilliant. The most disturbing part is that people are actually going up to fix themselves a piece of cake with no regard whatsoever to what it represents. Even as it wails in pain, they enjoy it. Really fucking brilliant piece.
