That sort of makes sense in a pick up game, which is a friendly competition refereed by the participants. ANYONE who plays more competitively/ physically than everyone else looks like a jerk. Chances are if someone is roughing everyone up in a pickup game, they’re working out frustration from NOT being able to compete on any official level. But in a state championship game, all of the competitors enter into a formal contest officiated by neutral third parties, and everyone goes in with the understanding that they will be competing as hard as they can. No ump is going to eject someone for not being a gentleman, because it’s high level competition that COUNTS. The bottom line is that forfeiting a game is a cowardly move. All the moralizing and “gentlemanly” rhetoric in the world will not erase the perception that this team doesn’t think it can win, and that it won’t be able to handle the embarrassment of losing to a coed team. This girl came to play and to compete, and pretending that they want to protect her as a lady is both condescending and gutless.
