Australian Court Says Cleaner Who Found $100,000 In Toilet May Keep $80,000

The money was found in $50 and $100 notes on the ground floor toilets at the Channel 9 building in Melbourne.

The cleaner, Chamindu Amarsinghe, found $50 and $100 notes in a bin in a disabled toilet cubicle at Channel Nine's building at the Docklands in Melbourne in 2011.

Amarsinghe told his supervisor and a plumber found more than $1000 in the pipes, before finding the rest of the $100,000 haul.

"There was too much to count," he said. "But when I touched the notes ... I realised it was real money."

Melbourne's magistrate said there's "no reason why such honesty should go unrewarded" before giving the cleaner $81,597 this week. Police never found out where they money came from or how it got there.

"I'm really, really lucky. I'm not going to waste it," said Armasinghe, who lives in New Zealand and works in IT. The remaining money will go to the state of Victoria.
